"Dance Once more" is a song recorded by American vocalist Jennifer Lopez for her first greatest hits album, Dance Again... the Hits (2012). It features invitee vocals from American rapper Pitbull. The song was written past Enrique Iglesias, Bilal "The Chef" Hajji, AJ Junior, Pitbull and RedOne, who also produced the song. At the time of the vocal'southward production, Lopez was unsure whether or not the song would be the pb unmarried from a greatest hits album, or a new studio anthology.
"Dance Again", an uptempo dance-pop and electropop song, features Lopez singing about wanting to dance and love, and it contains several sexual innuendos. Lopez credits the song every bit her anthem and metaphor, which stood for her surviving a rough divorce. It marks the third collaboration between Lopez and Pitbull following "Fresh Out the Oven" (2009) and the 2011 unmarried "On the Flooring". Following its release, "Trip the light fantastic Over again" went number i in Greece, S Korea, the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, and the Billboard Global Trip the light fantastic Tracks nautical chart. An accompanying music video was directed past long-fourth dimension collaborator Paul Hunter and choreographed by Frank Gatson, Jr. The video premiered during an episode of American Idol on April 5, 2012, where Lopez was a guess. Her swain of that fourth dimension Casper Smart appears in the video. Though the clip was welcomed with positive reviews, several critics noted that the video's content wasn't suitable for a premiere on the family unit-friendly American Idol, with some even criticizing Lopez for debuting the video on the television prove. Groundwork [edit]
Later on experiencing a decrease in her commercial success with her 5th and half-dozen studio albums, Como Ama una Mujer and Brave (both 2007) and the single "Louboutins" (2009), Lopez left Epic Records in Feb 2010, citing that she had fulfilled her contractual obligations and at present wished to release her seventh studio album, Love?, nether a new characterization.[2] Her departure from the label temporarily halted product on the album, even so upon signing a new contract with Island Records, recording resumed on the anthology.[3] "On the Floor", her get-go single with the label, was released in February 2011. The song topped the charts across the globe, becoming one of the about successful singles of the yr.[4] Post-obit the release of "On the Floor", Love? produced two moderately successful singles: "I'm Into Yous" and "Papi", both of which topped the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Love? itself was a moderate commercial success and was viewed equally a humble comeback from Lopez, as many had considered her recording career over.[v]
It was announced in November that Lopez was working on new material for her first greatest hits album.[vi] [7] [viii] The post-obit month, Lopez revealed that she had been playing some of her new music for L.A. Reid, who signed her to Island Records and left the label to get the CEO and chairman of Epic Records.[ix] This led farther speculation that Lopez had moved back to Epic Records, which was first reported in July.[10] The reports were later on confirmed untrue; Lopez was back with Epic Records as she had owed the label i last anthology to cease her contract, despite previously announcing that she had fulfilled her contract with them.[11]
Writing and production [edit]
"Dance Again" was written by RedOne, Enrique Iglesias, Bilal "The Chef", AJ Junior and Pitbull.[12] After hearing a demo version of the track, she begged Iglesias to let her record the song, telling him that information technology was "her song".[13] [14] Lopez, who was going through a divorce with Marc Anthony and the "breakdown of a family", felt every bit if the song had come to her at the "perfect moment".[xiii] [14] According to Lopez, the period was devastating because family is very important to her.[thirteen] Lopez revealed: "I had to plough that into something better"; she thought: "I don't want to just survive information technology, I want to come out better than that." Lopez didn't want to be "the woman who stayed in bed for months".[13] "I knew I had to get through it. I'd dance every 24-hour interval, I'd work out, I'd say a footling prayer and I yet wouldn't feel whatsoever better. Then I'd get to bed and go up the side by side solar day and practise it all once again. It was a process, and it very gradually got a petty easier ... I had to do it for my kids. I had to get through it for them."[xiii] She re-wrote parts of the verses to better relate to her experiences.[xiv] The vocal "helped lift her out of the darkness" and gave her hope again.[13] Looking back on the song in December 2012, Lopez stated that: "'Trip the light fantastic toe Again' became my anthem ... an expression of what I needed to exercise at that time in my life and for what I was taking on with [my career]. It was a beautiful metaphor that became my reality."[13]
Lopez's vocals for "Dance Once again" were arranged past RedOne and produced by Kuk Harrell. They were recorded at Pinky's Palace. Pitbull's vocals were recorded by Al Burna at Al Burna Studios, Miami, Florida. Chris "Tek" O'Ryan and Trevor Muzzy handled sound technology of the vocal, with assistance from Anthony Falcone and Peter Mack. O'Ryan and Trevor Muzzy were in charge of vocal editing. All instruments in the song were played and programmed by RedOne, who also produced the song. The song was later mixed past Trevor Muzzy.[12] In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Lopez revealed that she loved being able to collaborate with RedOne and Pitbull again. She stated: "We had a smashing chemistry the concluding time, and information technology was like 'Nosotros're going to accept to do something again.' And this was the perfect song. I beloved the message of the song. That when something bad happens, your life is not over. You have to go up. You lot're gonna live. You're gonna to be okay. You're gonna dance once again."[xiv]

Composition [edit]
"Trip the light fantastic Again" is an uptempo dance-pop and electropop song, with a length of three minutes and fifty-7 seconds (3:57).[29] It was written past Nadir "RedOne" Khayat, The Chef, Enrique Iglesias, Achraff Janussi and Armando "Pitbull" Perez, who is also featured on the song.[30] During an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Lopez stated that the song was most consummate when she heard it and that she only changed minor details, but kept the message of the song the same.[14] The electro beat begins, and the vocal kicks off with Pitbull'due south brief rap introduction.[31] The beat of the song shifts from upbeat pings and claps to a bass backdrop as Lopez takes over the vocals.[31]
The commencement verse begins with Lopez singing, "Nobody knows what I'm feeling inside. I find it then stupid then why should I hide that I love to make love to you baby."[31] The quick footstep electro beat returns, revving up energy before Lopez goes into the chorus, "I wanna dance and love and dance again." Pitbull sings the lyrics "Dance, aye, dear, adjacent", and even occupied a rap verse for the vocal. Sara Gates of The Huffington Postal service said that the chorus line "volition surely get stuck in your head."[31] It has been suggested that the chorus was "cheesy" and weak, and ends up being trumped by the pre-chorus, verses, overall production and fist-pumping beat.[28] The vocal contains sexual innuendos, and Lopez sings the span with heartbreaking emotion.[32] The song has been compared to Lopez's song "Waiting for Tonight".[33] Kyle Anderson from Amusement Weekly noted that Pitbull's lyrics "Can't even testify honey 'crusade they'll sue ya" was a reference to Lindsay Lohan suing him for using a reference to her without her consent in his song "Give Me Everything" (2011).[34] [35]
Critical response [edit]
Music critics have been divided on "Trip the light fantastic Again".[36] Kate Callahan from MTV.com pointed out the similarities between "Trip the light fantastic Again" and "On the Flooring"—"The vocal is a fun trip the light fantastic pop track with a slap-up beat, very much along the lines of their 2011 collaborative attempt 'On The Floor'."[29] Callahan said that the formats of the two songs were very alike, but also added that as the title implies, the song is danceable, despite not existence her nigh original vocal.[29] Katherine St Asaph of Popdust gave the song a mixed review, stating "[without sampling a vocal] means "Trip the light fantastic toe Again" doesn't take whatsoever of that swoon or allure, let alone one unifying riff, and it ways that right earlier every verse-to-prechorus or prechorus-to-poetry transition, you're imagining the "la-lalalala..." chorus that doesn't intermission out. What breaks out instead is the stately dance-pop that makes up the residuum of "On the Floor," more polite than pressing even when it's fifty-fifty clearer that the metaphor here is dancing-every bit-sex."[33] Robbie Daw of the website Idolator gave the vocal a positive review, writing that information technology was far more than superior and much more euphoric dance-pop offering than "On the Floor". Daw added that "the American Idol judge goes for more of a cheery, almost Kylie Minogue-esque trip the light fantastic toe-pop vibe with "Trip the light fantastic toe Once again". If we were gamblers, we'd put our coin on this becoming another huge hitting for J.Lo & Co."[37]
Glen Gamboa of Newsday gave the song a negative review, commenting that "She holds back for much of the song, with its blusterous chorus and moments where information technology seems ready to launch into a much broader anthem, but instead stays on a sleek, unpredictable line. Would it be improve if information technology blossomed into "Waiting for Tonight" like it wants to? Maybe."[38] Kyle Anderson from Entertainment Weekly gave the song a positive review, writing "Lopez one time again sings over a buttery disco groove with an assist from Miami's favorite bilingual MC." Anderson noted that the chorus of the song is "as pure a slice of effervescent pop as Lopez has ever been a role of, and while information technology probably isn't the sort of matter meant to exist listened to on headphones in a cubicle, it should play pretty well in places where grinding is encouraged (like clubs in Ibiza, and middle school dances)."[35]
Melinda Newman of Hitfix was positive in her review, saying that the song "It lives upwards to its title: You'll desire to put on your dancing shoes and trip the light fantastic once more. The song isn't equally interesting musically every bit the pair'due south previous hit collaboration, "On the Floor" simply information technology is more consequent in its commitment to beingness a full-on trip the light fantastic twirler ... Information technology'southward totally mannerly, especially the "woo..ooh" background singing."[39] Newman compared the chorus of the song to Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)" (2010).[39] Gina Serpe of E! News said "don't think for a minute that the meaning behind the song was lost on Lopez, who'due south been through some personal travails of her own this by year," and briefly commented that the song was "Likely already destined to hit the acme of the charts."[40] Similarly, Jessica Sinclair of Long Island Press commented that the song was a "sure-to-be-hit song."[41] Amy Sciarretto of Pop Crush labelled "Dance Over again" equally one of the all-time dance songs of 2012. She stated that: "The song has an infectious crush that'll become you moving and grooving."[42]

Music video [edit]
On March 3, 2012, Lopez revealed via social networking website Twitter that she would be shooting a new video for a song entitled "Dance Once more", writing "R U Fix 2 #DanceAgain".[67] The prune was directed by Paul Hunter; a longtime collaborator of hers.[16] [17] He had previously worked with her on the music video for her debut single "If You Had My Love" (1999), equally well as "Feelin' And then Expert" (2000) and "Papi" (2011).[68] The post-obit solar day on March 4, Lopez posted a sneak peek of the shoe she wore in the music video on her official website.[69] On March 31 and April i, Lopez posted more pictures from the video for "Dance Again" on her official website.[70] [71]
A sneak peek of the video was shown on the Apr 5, 2012 episode of American Idol, while the full video premiered later on that day on Lopez's Vevo Channel.[72] Lopez's boyfriend Casper Smart, also a choreography and dancer, appears in the video.[73] Lopez told Actress Television that information technology was very "natural" working with Smart, "Information technology was only a very natural thing for us to exercise that together. Everything that the song is saying—where I'm at—information technology was just very natural. It didn't feel forced."[74] The video uses product placement for both Lopez's fragrance, Glowing[75] and Voli vodka,[76] for which Pitbull is a spokesperson.[77]
Synopsis [edit]
The music video for "Dance Again" opens on a black screen, with the words "E'er remember... You will alive, you will love, yous will dance again" printed in white.[78] Lopez is then shown entering a "nothing-gravity" room, where a stream of vodka is flowing in the air.[75] She looks up to an "orgy of scantily clad dancers", piled up on one another according to MTV'south Jocelyn Vena.[76] [79] Lopez is airlifted from the ground, and joins the erotic orgy. The brim she was wearing when she entered the room is ripped off, revealing a low-cut top. Smart then enters the room. Vena wrote, "In the bevy of people, Lopez crawls to her guy, he crawls to her, and from at that place they embark on a love thing, full of pop-and-lock trip the light fantastic moves and blindfolded shenanigans".[76]
RadarOnline commented, "In the video, Casper is extra friendly to J.Lo'due south derrière, caressing his lady love's famous rear cease as she shows off her fab effigy in a black Basque and hellacious heels. Casper shows off his sturdy build, which is covered past tattoos."[79] The couple also interruption into one of Lopez's signature dance breaks.
Scenes with Pitbull shown sitting down in forepart of a door are shown.[75] Smart is later seen dancing with Lopez while they are both covered in glitter.[80] Towards the cease of the clip, Lopez is seen dancing in between two stripper polls in a black studded ingather tiptop. She is joined once over again by Smart, who she blinds with a blindfold that reads "love is blind", and they after swap roles (these scenes reflected the photo stills posted to Lopez'south website days before).[fourscore] [81] The video closes with a shot of Lopez's fragrance, Glowing.[76]
Response [edit]
Sarah Maloy of Billboard magazine noted the amount of sexual content in the music video, writing that it as "body glitter, random choreographed dance numbers, poles and sex—lots of sexual practice. Oh and Pitbull's at that place too, hanging out on the sidelines while J.Lo gets muddy, dabbling in orgies and bondage".[80] Entertainment Weekly 's Marc Snetiker observed that although the song was "relatively harmless and catchy, the video is...confusing", but idea it was worth watching.[75] Jenna Hally, writing for MTV Buzzworthy, praised Lopez in the music video, writing "holy moly, how can this woman have birthed two humans and all the same await this amazing?", however felt that it was inappropriate for its American Idol debut, adding "nosotros thought "Idol" was a family show? This video is less 'sit on the couch and chill with dad' and more 'call your boyfriend over immediately.'"[82] Access Hollywood found similarities between the scene in which Lopez "tin be seen grinding on the floor, surrounded past a host of hot bodies" and Australian recording creative person Kylie Minogue'due south music video for "All the Lovers" (2010).[83] AZ Central's Ed Masley heavily criticized the clip for ambulation on American Idol, and wrote:
- "Steven Tyler swaggers past the family-friendly threshold nearly every week on American Idol. But Jennifer Lopez made Tyler appear a bit prim and retiring by comparison when Idol screened her video for "Dance Again," seductively slithering on hands and knees across the floor to meet a lover who'southward tugging at something in his trousers. I'm not maxim there was anything explicit going on. And the version on VEVO goes much heavier on kink. But Idol viewers did go scenes of J.Lo'due south multi-platinum haul being handled with care by a shirtless male dancer ... She eventually blindfolds the shirtless male person dancer, caressing his chest until most five-yr-olds could figure out what happens side by side ... I savor a tawdry music video every bit much as anyone. My problem with the J.Lo clip is "Idol" still pretending information technology'south a family friendly show while screening it—because you can't have everything both ways, despite what Pitbull suggests for your girl in the version on VEVO".[84]
A representative from a Right Wing Grouping, Dan Gainor, condemned the video, saying it was as well steamy for "family-friendly American Idol" and went every bit far as proverb her "skanky new video shows how desperate she is to retain her fame despite her fading relevance".[85] East! Online's Natalie Finn commented, "Pitbull gets to proceed his accommodate on, but Lopez, clad for the most part in a bodysuit and fishnets (and at times a solid coat of glitter) is blank for the grabbing. Her fellow ladies in the video... may have even less on—which is perfect since there's a gravity-defying orgy taking place in the background every bit Lopez and the well-muscled Smart make eyes at each other".[86]
Live performances [edit]
Lopez performed the vocal on the May 10 results prove of American Idol where she used to exist a judge.[87] She was dressed in a skin-tight blue bodysuit and black stockings, surrounded past a dozen back-up dancers.[88] On October 6 she performed at the German idiot box show Wetten, dass..?, which is the biggest show in Germany. The song is also a closing number of her first ever world tour, Dance Again World Tour.[89] [90] Lopez performed the song as part of her medley during the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards on August 20, 2018, at Radio Urban center Music Hall in New York City.[91]
In pop culture [edit]
The song was covered on the American TV serial Glee in the episode "The New Rachel". Sung by Kate Hudson, it was in a mashup with the Lady Gaga song "Americano".[92] In August 2013, a prune of 13-yr-old boy Sam Horowitz performing during his Bar Mitzvah became a viral video online. In the video, which garnered pregnant media attending, Horowitz performs a choreographed dance routine to "Trip the light fantastic toe Once more".[93] [94] [95]
