Let'south talk about the vinyl start.  Be sure to utilize Oracle 651 vinyl.   This is a permanent adhesive vinyl and it really works the best for sticking to canvass or wood.   Oracle 651 comes in a multifariousness of colors, including glitter, and then you volition take lots of options with your design.

If you need more help with vinyl types, see my vinyl guide here.

Prepping the Sheet

Canvas is not a smooth surface.  This is what makes it a chip of a challenge to get vinyl to stick to it.  In order to combat that, nosotros demand to prep the surface of the sail to make it smoother for vinyl adhesion.

There are three dissimilar methods you can utilize to exercise this.

The first manner you tin can prep your canvas is past painting it.  If you wanted to change the background color anyway, this is probably your best bet.

If you lot don't desire to paint, spray adhesive is your next option.Just spray the entire surface of the canvas with your spray adhesive and allow dry.   Afterwards the agglutinative is dry it will not experience sticky, but it adds a blanket to the sail to become that vinyl to stick better.

The tertiary option is to use modern podge.   Apply mod podge to your unabridged canvas and let dry.

I have tried all three, just mod podge is what I utilize most ofttimes.  I always take information technology on hand, and I don't accept to go outside to spray anything.

Applying the Vinyl to the Canvas

Now that your canvas is prepped, we are prepare to stick on the vinyl.

I practise want to mention transfer paper really quick.  I prefer to use articulate contact paper to transfer my vinyl. Some of the transfer newspaper brands are entirely as well sticky.  The but exception to this is when you are using glitter vinyl, information technology needs a super sticky transfer paper.

Tip: Before you utilise the contact paper to your vinyl, stick it to your clothes a few times to reduce the stickiness even more than.

Centering your vinyl design onto a canvas and burnishing it down

Earlier y'all put your vinyl design onto the canvas, grab a large hardback book.

One of the difficulties with getting the vinyl to stick is the canvas does not have a hard surface.  Nosotros will exist using a lot of force per unit area burnishing the vinyl.   Placing a hard book under the canvass will requite us the perfect business firm surface we demand.

Adjacent, line upwardly your design how yous want information technology. Kickoff at the center of your vinyl transfer and scrape out to the edges to forestall bubbles.

Now we really need to rub (also called burnishing) that vinyl onto the canvas.  You tin can use your Cricut scraper, an old credit bill of fare, or even a lawn tennis brawl works really well (apply business firm pressure while rolling it over your pattern)

After you've rubbed until you tin't rub anymore, it's time to skin back the transfer newspaper.

Peeling back the transfer paper after the vinyl is stick to the canvas

Peel the paper back slowly at an angle.  Your vinyl should be stuck without any problems!

Tips and Tricks if the Vinyl Still Won't Stick

Every once in a while yous will become a hurting in the barrel area.  Maybe our base of operations wasn't applied enough in that expanse, or we didn't rub quite difficult enough there.

vinyl letters not sticking to the canvas when transfer paper is pulled up

If this happens to you, lay the transfer paper back down in that spot and rub really difficult over that letter over again.  Well-nigh of the time it will stick after that.

There are some fonts that stick better than others.  The thick fonts that have more surface surface area will be easier to transfer.

The really sparse, frequently the script fonts can be more difficult.

The script on this project did pretty decent.  In that location was i expanse that decided to be a hurting though.

using a cricut weeding tool to stick vinyl letters to canvas

And that was the thin petty 'I' in Risen.  If y'all run into a thin letter of the alphabet that wants to come up up with the transfer paper no matter how many times y'all rub, try using your Cricut Weeding Claw.

Use the hook to hold down the letter while pulling the transfer paper away.   Press downwards on the vinyl letter with your finger afterward the transfer paper is off.  The letter of the alphabet will stick fine after that.

Should I Seal the Vinyl Messages After They Are Transferred?

I exercise not seal my vinyl letters because Oracle recommends that you exercise not.  It tin distort and damage the vinyl.

That said I know plenty of people who do apply mod podge or polyacrylic over the vinyl letters without whatever problems.  Just know it's not recommended by the manufacturer.

So y'all see getting vinyl to stick to canvas doesn't accept to be frustrating at all!  But remember to prep your canvas, and use a hard book and so you can apply firm force per unit area while burnishing.  And if you lot do run into stubborn areas, now you know the tricks to work past them.

Hither's the pic again of my finished product. The vinyl transferred beautifully and will remain that style for many years to come.
